Grammy-nominated harpist Brandee Younger furthers the musical language of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane in a personal way on Gadabout Season. "This writing process forced me to be completely honest," she says. "I'm not hiding behind someone else's work." Despite her conservatory training, she never formally studied composition, so her approach is driven by pure creative desire. "It comes from what I listen to—a hybrid of all my influences: jazz, classical, and of course, old-school R&B, hip-hop," Brandee explains. On Gadabout Season, Younger collaborates with Shabaka Hutchings, Courtney Bryan, and Josh Johnson.
