The Cure

The Cure is a band around singer Robert Smith that started as a typical gothic/post-punk band, but later successfully opted for a broader pop sound .

The British band The Cure broke through in the waning years of punk with a minimalist, somber sound that made them one of the figureheads of gothic rock. This association was further reinforced by singer Robert Smith's characteristic appearance – black clothing, teased hair, and sloppily applied lipstick. They even considered their debut album, Three Imaginary Boys (1979), a failure, but by Seventeen Seconds (1980), everything had fallen into place. The representative "A Forest" actually yielded their first (radio) hit.

The following albums, Faith (1981) and Pornography (1982), were made in the same gothic/post-punk style. In the early 1980s, however, Robert Smith felt the urge to spread his wings musically and simultaneously shed the now-constricting gothic stigma. Singles like "Let's Go To Bed" and especially "Love Cats" revealed a completely different, more upbeat sound. This line continued with the albums "The Top" (1984), "The Head On The Door" (1985), and "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" (1987). "Disintegration" (1989) was widely hailed as The Cure's best work during this second youth. "Wish" (1992) was also well received and contained a hit with the exuberant "Friday I'm In Love."

In the following years, The Cure became less productive, although new albums were released intermittently: Wild Mood Swings (1996), Bloodflowers (2000), The Cure (2004), and 4:13 Dream (2008). Because of singles that didn't appear on albums, compilations like Boys Don't Cry (1980), Standing On A Beach (1986), and the box set Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities, 1978–2001 (2004) were always worthwhile. In recent years, things have become somewhat more lively around The Cure. In 2019, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted by Trent Reznor of Ine Inch Nails—one of the many artists influenced by The Cure. That same year, The Cure played at Pinkpop. The band was hailed by both the press and the public as one of the festival's revelations.
