Maurizio Pollini's recordings of the Polonaises have achieved cult status. Pollini offered a playing of superb control and subtle poetry. His greatest achievement is in suggesting the directness of an inspired improvisation, while simultaneously maintaining the beautiful unity of a preconceived whole. To improve audio quality, the work was mastered and excised from the original 4-track tapes at 45 rpm and redistributed onto two LPs.
