Strange Boarders
In 2016, the Netherlands suddenly gained a so-called supergroup. It's the term used to describe a band formed by members who each have a rich musical past. In the case of Vreemde Kostgangers, it's singer Boudewijn de Groot, singer-bassist Henny Vrienten, who is particularly well-known thanks to Doe Maar, and Golden Earring singer and guitarist George Kooymans. The men have known each other for a long time. Henny Vrienten had previously been a member of Boudewijn de Groot's backing band, including one with his later Doe Maar colleague Ernst Jansz.
A first surprise performance in 2013 during the 65th birthday of Golden Earring drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk left them wanting more. In 2016, there was finally enough space in their collective schedules for a theater tour. The trio played some new songs and some from their own musical history. The concerts were a success. In early 2017, their self-titled debut album was released, which once again demonstrated how well these musicians, with such diverse backgrounds, complemented each other. It was recorded partly live at the Wisseloord studios in Hilversum in front of a modest audience. That same year, their second album, Nachtwerk, was released.
A new concert series was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In early 2021, it was revealed that George Kooymans was suffering from the muscle disease ALS, marking the end of both Golden Earring and Vreemde Kostgangers. Henny Vrienten passed away in 2022. George Kooymans did, however, finish work on Mist, the supergroup's third album, which was released in 2023. This brings the book of Vreemde Kostgangers to a definitive close.
