Supertramp
Supertramp was a progressive rock band that reached an audience of millions in the 1970s with albums such as Crime Of The Century and Breakfast In America.
Supertramp was formed in 1969. Their first album, simply titled "Supertramp," was released in the summer of 1970. The British band played progressive rock, a genre that was especially popular in the early 1970s. However, the album was ignored, as was its successor, "Indelibly Stamped" (1971). Crime of the Century (1974), however, provided Supertramp with their breakthrough, thanks in part to the hit "Dreamer." On this album, the band also found their own sound, dominated by the contrasting contributions of their two bandleaders, singers and musicians Rick Davies and Roger Hodgeson.
Supertramp quickly became one of the most popular British rock bands. Their success was effectively built upon with the albums Crisis? What Crisis? (1975), Even In The Quietest Moments... (1977), and Breakfast In America (1979). The latter album, in particular, was an immense, worldwide success and yielded hits such as The Logical Song, Take The Long Way Home, and Goodbye Stranger. The band's qualities as a live act were perfectly captured on the double album Paris (1980). ...Famous Last Words... (1982) proved to be the last album Roger Hodgeson would be involved with. The musician left after disagreements within the band and subsequently opted for a career under his own name. In The Eye Of The Storm (1984) was his first and most successful solo album.
Under Rick Davies' leadership, Supertramp continued, releasing commendable albums such as Brother Where You Bound (1985), Free As A Bird (1987), Some Things Never Change (1997), and Slow Motion (2002), though Roger Hodgeson's contribution was sorely missed. While calls for a reunion of the classic lineup were frequent, the old wounds proved too deeply rooted. The prospects for such a reunion now appear to be definitively lost. After Rick Davies faced serious health problems, Supertramp has been suspended, and it is prodigal son Roger Hodgeson who keeps the band's musical legacy alive through his performances.
