Shania Twain
Shania Twain is one of the most successful singers of the past 30 years. Her 1997 album, "Come On Over," remains the best-selling album of all time by a female artist, selling 40 million copies and counting. A beautiful voice, sophisticated videos, and a sublimely produced blend of contemporary pop and traditional country music make this Canadian singer an absolute global star.
Born on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Shania Twain didn't have success handed to her. She had a difficult childhood. Her parents were poor and had a turbulent marriage. From a young age, Shania Twain was singing in local bars to earn some extra cash. Music was her great passion, and she was determined to become a professional singer. She sang in cover bands, worked feverishly on her own songs, and earned a living doing odd jobs.
After moving to America, Shania Twain was discovered, and in 1993, her self-titled debut album was released. The reviews were positive, but the album wasn't a commercial success. Nevertheless, it would have major consequences. World-famous producer John Robert "Mutt" Lange (Foreigner, Def Leppard, Heart, Bryan Adams, AC/DC, among others) heard some of the songs and was immediately drawn to them. He not only became her new producer, but the two also married in 1993. In 1995, The Woman In Me, Shania Twain's second album, was released. Robert John "Mutt" Lange had given the songs he co-wrote just the right sheen. Its success was enormous. No fewer than eight tracks were released as singles. The album ultimately sold 20 million copies. Shania Twain became a global star and was quickly crowned the Queen of Country Pop.
Her success accelerated thanks to her third album, Come On Over, featuring hits like the ballad "You're Still The One" and playful country-pop songs like "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman." She doubled the sales figures of her previous album. The album was followed up with an excellent follow-up in 2002, "UP!" Things then quieted down around Shania Twain. In 2005, she contributed the song "Shoes" to the soundtrack of the TV series "Desperate Housewives." In 2011, she contributed to Michael Bublé's Christmas album. It soon became known that she was struggling with personal problems. Physical ailments took a toll on her voice, and her marriage to Robert John "Mutt" Lange fell apart. However, in 2017, she returned with the album "Now" and the concert series "Let's Go in Las Vegas." In 2022, Netflix aired the candid documentary "Not Just A Girl," in which she reflects on her turbulent life. The Queen of Country Pop completes her comeback in 2023 with the feisty "Queen of Me." The unyielding singer who opened so many doors for others is considered a major inspiration by stars like Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Rihanna, and Harry Styles.
