Lorde
Lorde is the stage name of Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, born in New Zealand on November 7, 1996. Since the release of her debut album, Pure Heroine (2013), she has become one of the most striking and successful singers of her generation. Her songs are striking for their subtle arrangements, understated vocals, and lyrics that frequently address major themes.
She signed her record deal back in 2009. The world only became acquainted with her three years later, thanks to the initially (free) digitally distributed EP The Love Club. Anyone with a finger on the pulse will immediately recognize that Lorde is a remarkable new phenomenon. She proves this once again with her debut album, Pure Heroine, featuring the single "Royals." The combination of her vocals, songs, and lyrics earned Lorde numerous compliments, and the debut album sold well. The album, which drew comparisons to the likes of Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Rey, shot into the top 10 in countries like the US and the UK.
The meteoric rise continued with the albums Melodrama (2017) and Solar Power (2021), while Lorde hinted at a fourth album in 2024. She has already proven herself as an exciting live act during her world tours and performances at prestigious festivals like Coachella and Lolapalooza. For the film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, she recorded a cover of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," once a hit for Tears For Fears. In 2014, she sang a powerful version of "All Apologies" at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame event with the surviving members of Nirvana. And in 2024, for a Talking Heads tribute, she recorded a version of the original Al Green song "Take Me To The River." In just over 10 years, Lorde has become a versatile artist.
