Irish composer John Field, a contemporary of Beethoven, was the first to compose a series of piano Nocturnes. He is thus the founder of the genre and a major influence on Frédéric Chopin, among others. Field's romantic works, inspired by the atmosphere of the night, are performed on this album by pianist Alice Sarah Ott: "By recording this album, I hope to share the story of this historically important composer and to encourage listeners to discover the origins of the Nocturne."
