Keane
Keane was formed in 1995 by three school friends: singer Tom Chaplin, keyboardist Tim Rice-Oxley, and drummer Richard Hughes. Initially, guitarist Dominic Scott was also a member, but in 2001, the band continued as a trio. As a result, Keane developed a distinctive, recognizable sound centered around vocals, keyboards, bass, and drums. The guitars so prevalent in Britpop were conspicuous by their absence.
That was still the case when their debut album, Hopes and Fears, was released in 2004. An album full of fragile, melancholic pop songs featuring Tom Chaplin's angelic vocals, it was an instant global success and became one of the best-selling albums of 2004. The global hit "Somewhere Only We Know" also shot up the charts worldwide and was a radio hit for months. Hits like "Everybody's Changing," "Bedshaped," and "This Is the Last Time" followed, making it clear that Keane was no one-hit wonder.
The success continued with the albums Under the Iron Sea (2006), Perfect Symmetry (2008) – on which the guitar reappeared – and Strangeland (2012). After the compilation The Best of Keane (2013), things went quiet around the band. After a few turbulent years, they needed to recharge. And there were solo plans. Tom Chaplin released two albums under his own name: The Wave (2016) and the Christmas album Twelve Tales of Christmas (2017).
The long-awaited comeback followed in 2019. The band first resumed touring and later that year released Cause and Effect, an album on which keyboardist and composer Tim Rice-Oxley wrote about his recent divorce. Pop music was thus enriched with a moving breakup album.
