Pianist Mal Waldron's "The Quest," recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey in June 1961, was released in July 1962 on the New Jazz label. It features Eric Dolphy (alto sax, clarinet), Booker Ervin (tenor sax), Ron Carter (cello), Joe Benjamin (double bass), and Charlie Persip (drums). Waldron composed all seven tracks, which lie somewhere between hard bop and avant-garde, including the jazz standard "Fire Waltz."
