The second half of the 80s was mainly characterized by good but often smoothly produced pop music and hair metal.
However, towards the end of the decade a counter-narrative began to develop which became increasingly dominant in the 1990s.
Led by grunge and alternative bands like Weezer, The Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Live and The Cranberries, but also 'older' acts like REM, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Iggy Pop, alternative rock music was back in the spotlight on radio and in the charts.
The new double LP 90's Alternative Collected features 26 of these bands and artists who gave new impetus to music in the '90s.
