Steven Wilson will release his eighth studio album, The Overview, on Fiction Records on March 14, 2025. Two tracks, 42 minutes, equal parts wildly ambitious and brilliantly daring, the album features endlessly captivating conceptual lyrics that seamlessly move between the cosmic and the mundane, genre-defying, ultra-melodic music... it promises to be a truly unique release in 2025.
For each track on The Overview, Wilson draws on different aspects of his career, spanning over three decades. There are nods to the expansive, soaring sound of the classic Porcupine Tree albums, the world-building storytelling of The Raven That Refused To Sing, and the forward-thinking electronics of his most recent solo releases (The Future Bites and The Harmony Codex). The result is a sound that is both unique to this release and instantly recognizable as Steven Wilson.
Steven Wilson on The Overview: “The Overview is a 42-minute journey based on the reported 'overview effect,' in which astronauts viewing Earth from space undergo a transformative cognitive shift, typically experiencing an overwhelming appreciation and perception of beauty and a heightened sense of connection to other people and the Earth as a whole. But not all experiences are positive; some truly see Earth for what it is—insignificant and lost in the vastness of space, and the human race as a problematic species. The music attempts to reflect the vastness of space and our place within it. The idea is to imagine space not as the cozy place depicted in most science fiction, but for what it is—something beyond our understanding, a place of anti-life, vast, cold, and black. Reflecting this, the album presents images and stories of life on Earth, both good and bad.”
