Description

Celebrating the legacy of Bass Culture, the seminal 1980 album from Jamaica-born, British-based dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. Released on Island Records and produced in collaboration with Dennis Bovell (credited as Blackbeard), the album stands as a defining statement of Johnson’s politically charged poetry and the wider UK dub movement of the late 20th century. With contributions from members of Matumbi, including Bovell, Lloyd “Jah Bunny” Donaldson and Webster Johnson, the record fuses deep, roots-driven rhythms with incisive spoken word, capturing the social tensions and cultural landscape of the time.
Bass Culture is widely regarded as one of Johnson’s most powerful works, blending militant lyricism with immersive dub production. Among its standout tracks, “Reggae fi Peach” serves as a poignant tribute to Blair Peach, the New Zealand-born teacher and activist killed in London in 1979 during an Anti-Nazi League protest. The track exemplifies Johnson’s role as both poet and documentarian, addressing systemic injustice and giving voice to the Black British experience with clarity and urgency.
Decades on, the album remains a cornerstone of dub poetry and a vital piece of British musical history, continuing to influence generations of artists across genres. Its themes of resistance, identity and social justice resonate as strongly today as they did upon its original release.
This special edition marks the first time Bass Culture will be pressed on orange vinyl, released as part of Reggae Week this summer. The limited pressing brings a fresh visual dimension to this landmark recording, offering collectors and fans a new way to experience one of the most important and enduring albums in reggae and spoken word history.
