Zayn Malik, because of his appearance and behavior, is the typical 'bad boy' of One Direction, the group he joined in 2010 after auditioning for The X Factor. He is therefore the one who ultimately has the most difficulty with the musical formula that the wildly popular boy band is stuck with. Due to a combination of this dissatisfaction and exhaustion from the overfull work schedule, he said goodbye to his colleagues Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlison in 2015, and then went his own way.
Any doubts about his viability as a solo artist were dispelled in 2016 with his debut album, Mind Of Mine. The single "Pollowtalk" immediately earned him a number one hit in the US and UK. The mix of soul, funk, R&B, hip hop, reggae, pop, and rock, among other genres, made it clear that Zayn Malik had indeed realized his artistic ambitions. A remix of "Pillowtalk" was released that same year, featuring Lil Wayne. The album, Mind Of Mine, reached the top 10 of the album charts in many countries, reaching number 3 in the Netherlands and a top position in the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, and Norway, among others.
Zyna Malik continued his musical journey with Icarus Falls (2018), a concept album based on Greek mythology. Timbaland was involved as one of the producers. It was another artistic and commercial success for Zyna Malik. The album was followed by Nobody Is Listening (2021), which features artwork designed by Zyna Malik himself. For his fourth album, Room Under the Stairs (2024), he drew inspiration from country singers Willie Nelson and Chris Stapleton, according to an interview in Rolling Stone magazine, which is particularly evident in the lyrics, which are taken directly from his own life.
