Volbeat
Thanks to a unique combination of metal, rock & roll and rock-a-billy, Volbeat became the most successful rock band Denmark has ever produced.
In the 1990s, Michael Poulsen was the vocalist and guitarist for the Danish death metal band Dominus. The Copenhagen-based band achieved a commendable underground reputation, but by the end of the decade, the frontman had grown tired of the genre's limitations. In 2000, he even realized it would be better to start with a clean slate. Dominus quietly died, and Michael Poulsen, along with a few colleagues, founded Volbeat.
In his new band, Michael Poulsen combined everything that fascinated him about American culture: the sultry atmosphere of B-movies, eighties metal, and the country and rock & roll he discovered thanks to his father's record collection. He miraculously managed to blend the sounds of Johnny Cash and Metallica into an exciting, unique rock sound. This was already evident on his debut album, The Strength / The Sound / The Songs (2005), released by the Dutch record label Mascot.
Things then took off for Volbeat. As early as 2006, the band was on the bill for the prestigious Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Shortly after, they were asked to open for Metallica. A show at Pinkpop in 2009 marked another milestone. Meanwhile, new albums were released at a rapid pace: Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil (2007), Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood (2008), Beyond Hell / Above Heaven (2010), Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies (2013), and Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie (2016).
With each album, the band's success grew. In 2010, the band toured the world with American giants Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. In 2013, Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano announced his transfer to the Danish band, further underscoring Volbeat's already high status. Their seventh studio album, Rewind, Replay, Rebound (2019), once again demonstrated that their unique formula for success was far from exhausted. Their position as the greatest rock band Denmark has ever produced therefore seems unchallenged for the time being.
