Tame Impala
Tame Impala is an Australian band that thrives at the intersection of psychedelic rock and electronic dance music.
Tame Impala was formed in 2007 in Perth, Australia, by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker. In its early years, the band performed extensively and released several EPs locally. In 2010, their official debut album, Innerspeaker, was released, revealing Tame Impala's deep indebtedness to the psychedelic music of the late 1960s. Yet, the band managed not to dwell on that past, but instead gave it a fresh, contemporary twist. Reviews frequently drew comparisons to Flaming Lips. While international interest in the band grew, their first album was primarily a resounding success in their home country.
Everything changed with the release of Lonerism in 2012. The band's sound had deepened, and according to many, it resulted in one of the best albums of 2012. This time, the success was global. In America, Lonerism was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Alternative Album. However, the success didn't cause the band to stagnate; quite the opposite. Kevin Parker had already hinted in interviews that, besides psychedelic music, he also loved electronic dance and polished chart-topping pop. These influences left their mark on the album that followed, 2015's Currents. It was an innovation that was appreciated by the fans, as this album, too, proved to be a commercial and artistic triumph.
Preceded by the singles "Borderline," "It Might Be Time," and "Posthumous Forgiveness," their fourth album, The Slow Rush, was released in February 2020. In just a few years, Tame Impala has become one of the best bands to emerge from pop music in recent years. The group has been showered with music awards in the past few years. A band that blends influences from all corners of pop history into a unique and recognizable sound.
