Stromae
Thanks in part to the worldwide hit Alors On Dance, Stromae became one of the most successful pop artists Belgium has ever produced.
Singer and songwriter Stromae was born Paul van Haver in 1985. He has a Rwandan father and a Belgian mother. Music emerged as his great passion from an early age, and he has been active in various capacities. He writes and produces songs, both for himself and for others. The young Belgian artist often combines elements of hip-hop and various electronic dance styles.
In 2009, he made a spectacular breakthrough with the catchy song "Alors On Dance." It became a number one hit in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and his own country. Overnight, Belgium gained a global star. The song also appeared on "Cheese," his debut album, released in 2010. Meanwhile, the single, in particular, was showered with every conceivable music award.
Riding on this wave of success, Racine Carrée also became a huge success in 2013, selling millions of copies worldwide. A year later, his song Ta Fête was chosen as the battle anthem of the Belgian national team, the Red Devils, during the World Cup in Brazil. That same year, Stromae also performed at prestigious festivals like Pinkpop and Rock Werchter. In 2014 and 2015, awards were again showered upon him, and the musician seemed to have a whole artistic life ahead of him. In 2017, however, he decided to retire from singing to free up time for other endeavors, such as his own fashion line. A win for couture, a loss for music.
