Roxy Music
With albums like Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure and Stranded, Roxy Music became one of the most important tastemakers of British pop in the 1970s.
The British band Roxy Music was founded in 1970. The classic lineup consisted of singer Bryan Ferry, saxophonist Andy Mackay, drummer Paul Thompson, guitarist Phil Manzanera, and keyboardist Brian Eno. The colorful quintet debuted in 1972 with Roxy Music, a self-titled album on which the group, with its exciting arrangements and cryptic lyrics, put an artistic spin on the prevailing glam rock scene. Widely recognized as one of the best debut albums of all time, it was followed flawlessly by For Your Pleasure (1973), Stranded (1973), Country Life (1974), and Siren (1975). The band fell silent in the latter half of the 1970s, but this impasse was broken with Manifesto (1979), Flesh and Blood (1980), and Avalon (1982). The latter two albums, in particular, contained streamlined pop of a high caliber. Roxy Music's album story ended there, but the band continued to perform for a long time, albeit intermittently. The last time the band was seen on stage was in 2011, and since then, Roxy Music has been in a state of hibernation that is becoming increasingly permanent.
As early as the 1970s, various members of Roxy Music launched solo careers. Brian Eno received rave reviews for albums like "Here Come the Warm Jets" (1974), "Taking Tiger Mountain" (1974), "Another Green World" (1975), "Discreet Music" (1975), and "Before and After Science" (1977). With his later albums, he would make a significant contribution to the development of ambient music. Guitarist Phil Manzanera would also build a successful career outside of Roxy Music. As expected, the flamboyant singer Bryan Ferry achieved great acclaim with solo albums such as These Foolish Things (1973), Another Time, Another Place (1974), Let's Stick Together (1976), In Your Mind (1977), The Bride Stripped Bare (1978), Boys and Girls (1985), Bête Noire (1987), Olympia (2010) – once started as a new Roxy Music album - The Jazz Age (2012), Avonmore (2014) and Bitter-Sweet (2018). The neat, sultry sound of Roxy Music therefore lives on mainly on his albums.
