"Mellow Madness" is a testament to Quincy's remarkable talent for creating a captivating sonic tapestry at the intersections of jazz, soul, and funk. This is soul jazz of the highest order from the 1970s, transcending its time and continuing the polished, piercing soul direction of Body Heat. The album introduced The Brothers Johnson, co-writers of four of the tracks, who laid their signature vocal harmonies over the funkiest grooves, while The Watts Prophets heralded a new musical genre on "Beautiful Black Girl," blending spoken word and beats. The highlight is perhaps Stevie Wonder's euphoric "My Cherie Amour," featuring vocals by Minnie Ripperton. Wah Wah Watson adds brilliant syncopation to "Tryin' to Find Out About You." The album's final track is the beautiful jazz standard "Bluesette," featuring a trombone jam and the virtuoso whistling of Toots Thielemans. With its tight arrangements and blending of styles, 'Mellow Madness' speaks to Quincy's genius in the studio.
