Norah Jones
Singer and pianist Norah Jones achieved international fame with Come Away With Me, a debut album on which she virtuously combined jazz, country, blues, folk and pop.
It seemed clear from an early age that Norah Jones—born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar—would find her way in music. She was the daughter of Sue Jones, an American concert producer, and Ravi Shankar, one of the most famous musicians India would produce. As a child, she sang in churches, attended various music schools, and performed regularly. She developed a great love for jazz, particularly the work of Bill Evans and Billie Holliday. It was only a matter of time before she would be discovered.
And so it happened, and in 2002 her debut album, Come Away With Me, was released by the legendary Blue Note jazz label. Expectations were already high, but they were spectacularly exceeded. The slightly understated combination of jazz, country, blues, folk, and pop touched countless music lovers worldwide. Ultimately, that first album sold over 27 million copies. Don't Know Why became a hit, and in the months that followed, the debut album was showered with prestigious awards.
The singer and pianist continued to showcase her talent, versatility and good taste on her subsequent albums: Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), The Fall (2009), Little Broken Hearts (2012), Day Breaks (2016) and Begin Again (2019). From her third album, Not Too Late, she also manifested herself more emphatically as a composer, although she also continued to work on other people's work. The adventures she undertook with colleagues were also interesting. For example, the compilation …Featuring (2010) contained a collection of songs she recorded with The Foo Fighters, Willie Nelson, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Outkast, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Belle and Sebastian, Ray Charles, Ryan Adams, Dolly Parton and Herbie Hancock.
She also recorded full-length albums with others, including "New York City" (with The Peter Malick Group, 2003), "The Little Willies" (as a member of The Little Willies, 2006), "Here We Go Again: Celebrating the Genius of Ray Charles" (with Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis, 2011), "Rome" (with Danger Mouse, Daniele Luppi, and Jack White, 2011), and "Foreverly" (with Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, 2013). She also guested on a large number of other albums. Norah Jones also proved herself as a more than accomplished actress in "My Blueberry Nights" and played herself in several other films. Versatility is a concept that has taken on new meaning in her case, but her recent albums also prove that the music was never a secondary priority.
