Nirvana
Of all the rock bands that conquered the world from Seattle, USA in 1991, Nirvana emerged as the most successful thanks to the album Nevermind.
Although the band formed in Aberdeen in 1987, Nirvana was widely considered part of the grunge generation that conquered the world from Seattle in the early 1990s. Singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Chad Channing debuted in 1989 with Bleach, an album of quirky, alternative rock that earned the band its initial recognition. However, nothing suggested that Nirvana would become one of the most important bands of the 1990s.
That did happen in 1991 with the release of Nevermind, featuring Dave Grohl as the new drummer. The fierce, desperate sound struck a chord with an entire generation of rock fans, and in just a few months, Nirvana became a phenomenon. Almost simultaneously, the world was introduced to the other talent Seattle had to offer, such as Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, TAD, The Melvins, Mudhoney, and My Sister's Machine. All groups were considered part of grunge: a raw, pure form of rock that put an end to the excesses of the previous decade.
In response to the immense success of Nevermind, Nirvana released the less accessible In Utero in 1993, which nevertheless still sold well. By then, it had already become clear to the outside world that Kurt Cobain, in particular, was struggling with himself, the drugs, and the pressures of success. This didn't stop him and his band from recording a stunning acoustic session for MTV in late 1993, which would be released posthumously as MTV Unplugged In New York.
On April 8th, the world was shaken by the news of the Nirvana frontman's self-imposed death. It definitively sealed the band's fate. In the years that followed, the archive yielded enough material for box sets like "With the Lights Out" and live albums like "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah," "Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!," and "Live at the Paramount." Against all odds, Dave Grohl reinvented himself as the singer and guitarist of his own Foo Fighters, which became one of the most successful rock bands of the past thirty years.
