Michael Kiwanuka
With his mix of soul, funk, rock, gospel and African influences, Michael Kiwanuka is one of the biggest additions to British pop music in years.
Michael Kiwanuka was born in London in 1987 to parents who had fled Uganda. He developed a deep love for music and, in the early years, was primarily active as a sought-after session guitarist. He also released a few EPs of his own work through small labels. 2011 brought him a major breakthrough. He toured as the regular opening act for the wildly popular singer Adele. That same year, he signed a record deal, which yielded his debut album, "Home Again," in 2012.
The album was hailed as a revelation. The reviews were rave, and sales figures were excellent. It reached number 4 on the British album charts. Michael Kiwanuka made a huge impression with a truly unique blend of soul, rock, gospel, funk, and his own African roots. In interviews, the British musician stated that he felt influenced by diverse heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, George Clinton, Eric Bibb, and Bob Dylan.
His important second album, Love & Hate, fully lived up to the promise of his debut. This time, the record reached number one on the UK album chart. This was also the case with Kiwanuka, his third album, released at the end of 2019. A colorful sound, beautiful songs, a captivating range of influences. Michael Kawinuka is one of the greatest talents to emerge from British pop music in years.
