Lewis Capaldi's breakthrough came in the spring of 2019 with the piano ballad "Someone You Loved," released at the end of 2018. The sensitive song marked his spectacular debut in international pop music. It became his first American hit, while in his native country it became the longest-running Top 10 single by a British artist of all time. His success was further enhanced by a Grammy nomination for Best Song.
Yet the Scottish singer-songwriter's success didn't come entirely out of the blue. In previous years, he'd already made a name for himself supporting the likes of Rag'n'Bone Man and Jake Bugg. He later shared the bill with Niall Horan, The Killers, Bastille, Sam Smith, and Ed Sheeran. His 2019 debut, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, is filled with crafted songs driven by Lewis Capaldi's soulful voice. He also impresses on the stages of international pop festivals with his understated performances that focus primarily on his voice and his songs.
In 2023, he made a deep impression on his audience with the documentary "How I'm Feeling Now," in which he candidly discusses his struggle with sudden success and Tourette's syndrome. That same year, his second album was released, whose title was another mouthful: "Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent." It was another huge success, both artistically and commercially. The album contained three new UK number one hits, "Forget Me," "Pointless," and "Wish You The Best." Love and loss are the album's themes, he later explained in interviews. The album confirmed the status of the typical "boy next door" as a reluctant superstar.
