Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey's songs are melancholic, mysterious, decadent, and dark. Her lyrics and music evoke black-and-white images of an America that no longer exists. It's an ominous atmosphere that's always beautifully captured in her album artwork. It's a unique sound that has made her one of the most beloved singers of her time.
The nostalgia for bygone eras is also reflected in the stage name Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, born on June 21, 1985, chose for herself. She named herself after actress Lana Turner and the Ford Del Rey car—most of which had long since found a resting place on the scrap heap. As Lana Del Rey, she debuted in 2010 with a self-titled album. Her breakthrough came with "Born To Die," released two years later. It became the fifth best-selling album of the year in America. Much praise was also heaped on her beautiful voice and the sultry atmosphere of her music.
She continues this line with 2014's Ultraviolence, 2015's Honeymoon, and 2017's Lust for Life. The latter album features a wide variety of guest appearances from The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Stevie Nicks, Sean Ono Lennon, and Playboi Carti. 2019's Norman Fucking Rockwell! earned Lana Del Rey a Grammy nomination for Best Album of the Year. In 2022, she made a guest appearance on the song Snow On The Beach from Taylor Swift's 2022 album Midnight. In the years that followed, she released Chemtrails Over The Country Club, Blue Banisters, and Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, albums with music as intriguing as the titles suggest. Meanwhile, the singer continues to develop and innovate. The album Lasso is announced for 2025. As the title in this case suggests, Lala Del Rey says the album will have strong country influences, though she plans to give it her own 'gothic' twist.
