Sergei Prokofiev completed his Scythian Suite, Op. 20, in 1914, just as he was about to leave his homeland. The Symphonic Suite, Op. 60, was composed almost twenty years later, after Prokofiev returned to Russia in 1933. The biographical turning points at which the two suites are situated also represent ideological turning points in Prokofiev's artistic approach. While the earlier work is characterized by a tendency toward chromatic melody, the later is dominated by diatonicism and incorporates medieval scales. These recordings have been remastered and edited for this release for the first time from the original 1-inch 8-track tapes.
