Description
Wayne Shorter was an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. He rose to prominence in 1959 when he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, for whom he eventually became the principal composer. He joined Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1964 and co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report in 1970. He recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader. Many of Shorter's compositions have become jazz standards, including "ESP" and "Footprints." His music has won twelve Grammy Awards. New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff described Shorter in 2008 as "probably the greatest living composer of small groups in jazz and a contender for the greatest living improviser." Legendary jazz saxophonist 'Introducing Wayne Shorter' was originally released on Vee-Jay in 1960. Included are five Shorter originals and a cover of "Mack The Knife", with Shorter joined by Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Jimmy Cobb (drums).
