Elbow
Along with Radiohead, Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol, Elbow is considered one of the most successful British bands of recent years.
Elbow's story certainly didn't get off to a flying start. The band, fronted by singer Guy Garvey, had been active since 1990, though only under the name Elbow in 1997. Incidentally, the group borrowed the name from a quote from the television series The Singing Detective. Well-attended gigs brought them initial recognition, which led to a deal with a major record label. A debut album was recorded, but after a major reorganization at the label, the band was prematurely let go. Elbow subsequently released a series of EPs through a smaller label.
In 2001, things finally picked up and their debut album, Asleep In The Back, was finally released. It received positive reviews, and at the prestigious Brit Awards, Elbow was lauded as Best New British Band. During performances, such as at the 2002 Glastonbury Festival, the band's often somewhat melancholic guitar songs proved to be a huge hit with a wide audience. The title of their second album, Cast Of Thousands (2003), was a nod to the massive acclaim the band received at concerts.
The success was perfectly followed up with Leaders Of The Free World (2005) and The Seldom Seen Kid (2008). The latter album, in particular, won over many new souls. One Day Like This became a hit and won a major Ivor Novello Award. Grounds For Divorce was used in the television series House and Top Gear, the film Burn After Reading, and the advertisement for the game Left 4 Dead, among others.
In the years that followed, Elbow again shone at various festivals, such as Roskilde and Rock Werchter (2009) and our own Pinkpop (2011). New albums were released in the form of Build A Rocket Boys! (2011) and The Take Off And Landing Of Everything (2014). Singer Guy Garvey used the time between the latter album and Little Fictions (2017) to create a solo album, Courting The Squall (2015). In October 2019, Giants Of All Sizes was released, with which Elbow consolidated their position as one of the most successful British bands of recent years, alongside Snow Patrol, Radiohead, Keane and Coldplay.
