boy genius
The supergroup is a phenomenon with a long history in pop music. It's a band formed by members who have already had an extensive career under their own names. To make a long story short: Boygenius is such a supergroup. The band consists of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. All three are American singers making a name for themselves in alternative folk. Their paths regularly cross, for example, when they open for each other at shows. They are also fans of each other's work. The idea of starting a band together naturally arises. The name Boygenius is actually a joke. But a joke with a story. It's a jab at the macho men they regularly encounter in the music industry: confident men who believe they are destined for great success. It initially led to a well-received EP in 2018. Supergroups don't always live up to the expectations of the big names, but Boygenius is more than the sum of its parts. This is once again evident on The Record, their full-length debut due out in 2023. Vocally, musically, and lyrically, the women seem to bring out the best in each other. What the future holds for Boygenius remains uncertain. However, it's certain that we'll be hearing a lot more from Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus—separately or together.
