Art Blakey | Just Coolin' (1LP)
The 'lost' album "Just Coolin'" by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers was recorded on March 8, 1959, at Rudy van Gelder's studio in New Jersey. The legendary jazz drummer collaborated with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt, a short-lived lineup of The Jazz Messengers. The album consists of six pieces, including two brand-new compositions: "Quick Trick" and "Jimerick."
"Just Coolin' proves to be an excellent hard bop album sixty years later, with Morgan and Mobley in particular in top form. The highlight is the long title track, which, thanks to the fireworks from both horns, surpasses Mobley's own version from 1955." – Volkskrant
