Description
In addition to Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Sonata and Second Cello Concerto, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason also plays Benjamin Britten's Cello Sonata on this album. He recorded both sonatas with his sister and frequent duo partner Isata Kanneh-Mason. Shostakovich wrote his Cello Concerto for the renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, with whom he also shared a mutual friendship. The sonatas on this album were recorded at Aldeburgh, in the same hall where Rostropovich and Britten jointly recorded Britten's Cello Sonata in 1968—also for Decca Classics. This recording was the one that made Sheku fall in love with the work.
