Pierre Boulez, a pioneer in every field of musical activity and a thinker of profound and penetrating originality, was a figure of great influence and significance from the 1950s until his death in 2016. He was a man whose name became synonymous with intellectual integrity and searching musicality. His legacy will live on in countless and diverse ways, arguably unparalleled. Deutsche Grammophon (and Philips before him) accompanied him on his journey for over forty years and are proud to have documented much of his most important work as a composer and conductor (he was an exclusive artist with DG for over 20 years).
Over a period of over forty years, these recordings have immensely enriched our catalog and revolutionized the way an entire generation listened to Stravinsky and Bartók in particular. By distilling music down to its essence, Boulez transformed the way we listen to the great works and facilitated our encounters with the avant-garde repertoire. His recorded legacy is an artistic achievement that will be relied upon for centuries to come. Boulez is the fifth most-awarded Grammy winner of all time. In 2015, he added a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy to his 26 Grammy Awards and 67 nominations.
