Zo zag de band er ook wel een beetje uit, toen de wereld dankzij een titelloos debuut kennis met hen maakte. Wat de Dire Straits ontbrak aan rock-‘n-roll uitstraling werd op die eerste plaat echter ruimschoots goedgemaakt door het op zichzelf staande geluid, de prachtige songs en het speelse gitaarspel van Mark Knopfler. J.J. Cale en Bob Dylan leken daarbij de belangrijkste invloeden te zijn.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMede dankzij de hit Sultans Of Swing groeide de Dire Straits in luttele maanden uit tot een topformatie. Het succes werd uitgebouwd met de albums Communiqué (1979) en Making Movies (1980). Tijdens de opnamen van die laatste plaat verliet David Knopfler de band om onder eigen naam verder te gaan. Het succesverhaal werd zonder haperen vervolgd met het ambitieuze Love over Gold (1982) – met daarop de prachtig hit Private Investigations – en het gepolijst klinkende Brothers in Arms (1985). Dit laatste album werd de eerste titel waar van de cd-versie als eerste een miljoen exemplaren verkocht werd.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn 1987 stopte Dire Straits, vooral omdat Mark Knopfler zich verder wilde ontwikkelen als componist van filmmuziek. Een reünie leidde tot On Every Street (1991) en de daaropvolgende wereldtournee. Het doek viel daarna opnieuw voor de band. Ditmaal definitief. Mark Knopfler bracht vervolgens onder eigen naam een hele reeks succesvolle platen uit, zoals Golden Heart (1996), Sailing To Philadelphia (2000), The Ragpicker's Dream (2002), Shangri-La (2004), Get Lucky (2009) en Down the Road Wherever (2018). Verzoeken om zijn oude band nieuw leven in te blazen wees hij consequent af. Toen Dire Straits in 2019 opgenomen werd in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame schitterde de meester zelfs door afwezigheid.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp
